Share the Love: Washing Feet

Writer's picture: Michelle GraberMichelle Graber

Have you ever had a pedicure? If you have not, here's what happens: The pedicure professional prepares a water bath for your feet. Sometimes, oils are added to water to soften and emolliate the skin. Sometimes, salts are also added to exfoliate the dead skin and cleanse feet. After the water bath, the soles of feet are sanded to remove callouses or areas where skin is pealing. Next, the pedicure professional use a pumice stone--a hard, porous stone--to smooth rough areas. Finally, the toe nails are trimmed, filed, and buffed. A lotion or oil is then massaged into the foot--the ultimate finale to a pampering luxury!

Seriously, if you haven't ever gotten a pedicure, you should get one. Better yet, give one. If getting a pedicure is glorious, image how generous is it to give a pedicure.

Lately, I've been thinking about how Jesus tried to teach what it meant to wash feet. There are several passages in the scriptures referencing feet washing. In Luke 7:36-50. I won't quote the scripture here, but the unnamed woman washed Jesus feet with her tears and wiped his feet with her hair. She kissed them and poured expensive perfume on Jesus' feet. The Pharisee hosting Jesus pointed out the woman as a sinner. Jesus answered with a parable:

"Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?" (Luke 7:41-42, NIV).

Jesus uses this woman's outpouring of love as a way to show how significant repentance and acts of service can be a blessing to others. Mary in the house of Lazarus repeats a similar scene, and Jesus himself washes the feet of the disciples saying "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them" (John 13:14-17). Jesus makes this call for his followers to act as Jesus has acted, to serve others with humility and love.
